Antimicrobial Resistance, Past, Present, and Future Prospects

Burhanuddin Alawadhi

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been a critical challenge in recent years. The number of effective antibiotics has been dwindling, leaving vulnerable patients susceptible to multi-drug resistance organisms (MDROs). Meanwhile, the amount of antibiotics has been going up, compounding the problem further. As such, efforts are taken to contain the spread of MDROs. These initiatives include a whole host of measures, including production of new antimicrobials, implementing antimicrobial stewardship and infection control measures, research and development of unique modalities for the treatment of MDROs and public health initiatives. This presentation aims to delineate the challenges and opportunities in a world riddled with AMR.
